Description
The Mitigation Coordinator develops and maintains the infrastructure necessary to support assigned counsel panel attorneys in building interdisciplinary legal defense teams. Through a holistic model of representation, this position helps address clients’ mental health, substance use, poverty, and other social needs to improve legal outcomes, promote stability, and reduce future system involvement.
The position is guided by the following core principles: ensuring seamless access to legal and non-legal services; facilitating interdisciplinary communication and collaboration; supporting advocacy through an interdisciplinary skillset; and fostering a strong understanding of, and connection to, the community and service providers.
Under the direct supervision of the Administrator of Indigent Defense, the incumbent develops and implements the mitigation program by reviewing applications from social workers, caseworkers, mitigation writers, and other professionals who seek panel membership or placement on a list of authorized providers. The incumbent maintains ongoing insight, understands the typical legal issues faced by clients, and engages with attorneys regarding the concept of mitigation. The incumbent exercises independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. While formal supervision is not a responsibility of this class, the incumbent may monitor interns or volunteers as assigned by the Department Head. Incumbent may be cross trained within the scope of the position. Performs related duties as required.
This will be a provisional appointment; permanent appointment will be contingent upon successful completion of a Civil Service examination and becoming reachable on the resulting eligible list.

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(A) Possession of a Master’s degree or higher in a behavioral science, criminal justice, or human services field; AND one (1) year of professional experience in: counseling, social work, casework, court advocacy, sentencing mitigation planning, indigent legal defense services, probation, parole, alternative-to-incarceration programs, mitigation writing, victim advocacy, or a closely related field; OR
(B) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in a field listed in (A); AND three (3) years of professional experience as outlined in (A).
NOTE: Part-time employment can be pro-rated to count towards full-time (based on number of hours worked per week).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Incumbent will be required to possess a valid, appropriate level, New York State Motor Vehicle operator’s license, or otherwise demonstrate the ability to meet the travel needs of the job.
