This work involves responsibility for assisting in the representation of indigent petitioners and respondents in Family Court as assigned by the Public Defender. Does related work as required. This position is for law school graduates who have not yet been fully licensed to practice law in New York State. Upon obtaining a New York State license to practice law, the incumbent will be appointed to a position of Assistant Public Defender with the corresponding salary grade.

Work Hours: Full Time, 35 hours per week with benefits

Salary: $76,162/yr. (Management Compensation Plan)

Location: Cortland County Public Defender’s Office

Status: Non-Competitive, Probationary

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a J.D., LL.B. or LL.M. Degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: The incumbent must obtain a license to practice law within one (1) year of the date of permanent appointment.

If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Pre-employment screenings required.
